There is a very specific kind of person who watched Naruto as a kid and then tried to go back as an adult expecting to feel nothing. And then the Zabuza arc started. And they were twelve years old again.
I’m that person. You’re probably that person too.
Here’s what I think people forget about the original series. Before Shippuden’s scale, before the war, before the gods and the infinite tsukuyomis, Naruto was telling small stories. Personal stories. A missing-nin and his fake emotionless tool who was actually just a kid who wanted a reason to feel something. A team of three kids learning what it costs to protect someone. A boy failing an exam and training until his legs gave out because he refused to let that be the end of his story.
The original arcs didn’t need to be big. They just needed to be honest. And they were so honest it hurts to rewatch them.
The Chunin Exams arc alone has more genuine character writing packed into it than entire series manage in their full run. Every fight meant something. Every loss meant something more.
You grew up on these arcs even if you didn’t watch them as a kid. They’re in your bones if you’ve ever loved this show.
So let’s see how much you actually remember.
Original Arcs
Zabuza Arc : The one that set the tone for everything. Kakashi gets taken down. Naruto and Sasuke do something nobody expected. And then Haku happens and the show looks you dead in the eye and says “this is not a safe story.”
The arc that made you realize Naruto was different. How well do you remember it?
The Chunin Exams : The greatest arc in the original series. I will not be taking questions. Rock Lee, Gaara, Orochimaru in the forest, every single preliminary fight, the invasion. This arc is a masterpiece start to finish.
One of the most packed arcs in shounen history. Let’s see if you caught everything.
The Orochimaru Arc : The moment the show introduced real stakes. A villain who didn’t want to fight you, he wanted to own you. The cursed seal, the sound village, the creeping feeling that something much bigger was coming.
Orochimaru Arc Quiz : How closely were you watching when the shadows started moving?
The Sasuke Retrieval Arc : Five kids chasing one. Every single member of the Retrieval Squad got their moment and it hurt every single time. Neji. Choji. Kiba. Lee. And then the final valley, and Naruto bleeding in the rain, and you realizing this wasn’t going to end clean.
Sasuke Retrieval Quiz : The arc that closed the original series. Do it justice.
